AI companion app Tolan raises $30M on Oct 19, betting on personable conversational partners

TechCrunch reported on Oct 19 that AI companion startup Tolan raised $30M to scale its alien-character conversational partners; the company originated from Playground Ventures

On October 19, TechCrunch reported that AI companion startup Tolan has raised $30 million to scale its personable conversational partners meant to help users find direction in everyday life.

Tolan was incubated out of Playground Ventures and centers its product on an alien-character companion, differentiating itself from Replika and Character.AI by leaning into "partnership" rather than entertainment or romantic companionship use cases. Proceeds will go toward expanding model capability, broader platform coverage, and user acquisition. The company did not disclose valuation or lead investor.

AI companion startups have attracted fresh attention, but the sector also faces regulatory scrutiny over child safety — the Disney/Character.AI acquisition on October 18 sits directly against a backdrop of related litigation and Texas Attorney General investigations. Tolan states in its product design docs that it enforces stricter age gating and conversation boundaries than legacy companion apps.
