Stripe to acquire OpenRouter for ~$7.5B, 5x valuation in 3.5 months

Payment service provider Stripe announced on August 19, 2026, an agreement to acquire AI model routing platform OpenRouter for approximately $7.5 billion, of which $1.5 billion is allocated to OpenRouter founders.OpenRouter is an AI model marketplace and routing platform that processes more than 10 trillion tokens daily and serves over 10 million developers globally. About 3.5 months earlier, OpenRouter had completed a $113 million round at a roughly $1.3 billion valuation. The $7.5 billion acquisition price is about 5.8x that valuation.OpenRouter founders will join Stripe to lead AI infrastructure-related businesses post-acquisition. Stripe's move secures a foothold in payment and model distribution in the AI economy, echoing the Aug 17 Synchrony-OpenAI partnership that brought Amazon and Walmart store cards into ChatGPT Checkout.The deal is one of the largest AI infrastructure acquisitions of 2026. Together with the Anthropic IPO plans and Cerebras CS-4 announcement, it sketches the consolidation rhythm of the AI infrastructure layer.
