OpenAI ends model supply to Cursor, effective Nov 12
Following SpaceX's $60B acquisition of Cursor parent Anysphere, OpenAI invoked a change-of-control clause and will stop supplying models from November 12.
On August 31, OpenAI officially announced it will terminate direct model supply to Cursor effective November 12, 2026. The decision follows the $60 billion acquisition of Cursor parent Anysphere by SpaceX.
OpenAI said it could not confirm that SpaceX would adhere to its terms of service, so it invoked the change-of-control clause. New models, including Astra expected to launch around September 3, will no longer be provided to Cursor. After the transition window, developers will only be able to use OpenAI models by bringing their own API keys.
Cursor previously noted that OpenAI models only account for about 5% of its traffic. Anthropic simultaneously announced it would increase Cursor's compute allocation to fill the gap left by OpenAI. Cursor parent Anysphere has also been placed under SpaceXAI alongside xAI, working on its own model roadmap.
The move mirrors Anthropic's earlier throttling of Windsurf when it was being acquired by OpenAI, highlighting how foundation-model API neutrality is being eroded by upstream-downstream competitive relationships, and may accelerate the trend of AI companies building their own model capabilities rather than relying on external providers.
