OpenAI Codex weekly active users surpass 25 million
OpenAI core product lead Tibo announced Codex weekly active users hit 25M, just 10 days after crossing 20M on Aug 21.
On August 31, OpenAI core product lead Tibo announced Codex weekly active users have crossed 25 million, only 10 days after passing 20 million on August 21. Codex also reset usage for affected paid users.
Codex is the programming agent OpenAI has been heavily promoting since the late-August ChatGPT Codex integration, now part of the new ChatGPT desktop app. The 25M WAU milestone makes Codex the fastest-growing consumer product at OpenAI after ChatGPT itself.
By contrast, per Ramp data shared earlier, Anthropic Claude Code weekly active growth slowed to 5.2% in August, drawing a sharp contrast with Codex. Codex's combination of terminal-agent capability plus the ChatGPT workflow entry point is widely seen as OpenAI's key lever for grabbing share from Claude Code and Cursor in the coding tool space.
