SpaceX closes $60B Cursor acquisition, Musk tells staff Grok is behind
SpaceX closed its all-stock Anysphere acquisition on Aug 14; around Aug 24, Musk told Cursor staff Grok still has "a long way to go".
On August 14, SpaceX completed the approximately $60 billion all-stock acquisition of Anysphere, the parent company of AI coding tool Cursor. Around August 24, Elon Musk gave his first address to Cursor's more than 1,000 employees.
According to The Information citing five attendees, Musk stated SpaceXAI has fallen behind competitors, that he is "not used to losing", and must quickly close the gap. Musk said Anthropic is leading the AI race and is a strong competitor, and SpaceX will continue expanding compute to have the largest compute reserves in the AI industry.
Cursor integration has begun: CEO Michael Truell will take a leadership role at SpaceXAI, reporting directly to Musk; co-founder Aman Sanger joins the pretraining team, and Sualeh Asif serves as SpaceXAI's machine learning lead. Cursor employees are being integrated into existing SpaceXAI teams, with internal collaboration systems like Slack being consolidated, and employees encouraged to move to SpaceXAI's Palo Alto offices.
