OpenAI Codex passes 20M weekly active users, investigates quota drain

OpenAI confirmed on Aug 23 that Codex passed 20M weekly active users, will credit Codex and ChatGPT Work users with a banked reset, and is investigating sub2api-to-API conversion abuse.

On August 23, the OpenAI Codex team lead confirmed that Codex passed 20 million weekly active users this week, continuing the accelerating growth curve from 6 million in July to 10 million and now 20 million.

OpenAI simultaneously confirmed it is investigating reports of faster usage-limit draining among subscribers, having identified unauthorized sub2api subscription-to-API conversion as the root cause. The company will credit Codex and ChatGPT Work subscribers with a banked reset. Legitimate users signing in with ChatGPT are not affected by the anti-fraud measures.

Comparative data from TickerTrends shows that as of August 10, Claude Code's four-week growth rate slowed to 5.2%, while Codex grew 20.8% over the same period. a16z's weekly chart published on August 24 shows that Codex adoption in the legal industry surged 108x since February, with sales and recruiting both up 41x, and marketing and healthcare up 26x and 24x respectively.
