OpenAI GPT-5.6 Luna cuts prices 80% to counter DeepSeek pricing
OpenAI cut GPT-5.6 Luna input and output prices from $1/$6 to $0.20/$1.20 per 1M tokens respectively, an 80% reduction.
On July 30, OpenAI significantly cut the API price of GPT-5.6 Luna, reducing input from $1 to $0.20 per 1M tokens and output from $6 to $1.20 per 1M tokens, an 80% reduction for both.
Luna is the most affordable lightweight variant in the GPT-5.6 series, targeting cost-sensitive high-volume workloads. After the cut, Luna is priced roughly in line with DeepSeek V4-Flash. OpenAI is using Luna to grab DeepSeek's market share in the mid-low API segment.
At the subscription level, ChatGPT Plus users' usage quotas were unaffected. The July 30 API price cut only affects developers calling Luna directly through the OpenAI API, not ChatGPT subscribers.
