On August 30, Cursor launched Rules 2.0, introducing two key capabilities: glob-pattern path scoping and branch-aware policy inheritance. Developers can assign distinct engineering guidelines to frontend components vs backend APIs, with rules automatically matching and activating based on file path.
For branch-aware inheritance, Rules 2.0 allows enforcing strict policies on release branches and relaxed policies on dev branches. Cursor Composer dynamically activates applicable rules for the current path without manual listing in the prompt.
The new version can reduce prompt overhead by approximately 60%, reserving more context window for active code implementation. Combined with the August 27 launch of Cloud Agents that no longer require a GitHub account to start, Cursor's moat in multi-agent and enterprise collaboration scenarios has further deepened.
