Anthropic hires Google TPU founder Amir Salek, advances in-house AI chip

Anthropic announced on Aug 22 the hire of former Google TPU lead Amir Salek to build an in-house AI chip design team.

On August 22, Anthropic announced the hire of Amir Salek, the founder of Google's custom chip project, to its compute team to lead the in-house AI chip design group. Salek will report to James Bradbury, Anthropic's head of AI compute.

Salek previously led Google's Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) business until 2022 and was involved in launching the first seven generations of TPU chips. Anthropic currently sources AI chips from NVIDIA, Google, and Amazon, and has begun recruiting for its own chip project in recent years.

Anthropic's rival OpenAI is also pushing forward on in-house chips. OpenAI has co-developed the Jalapeño chip with Broadcom and plans to begin using it by the end of 2026.
