Jack Ma joins Alibaba management in HK$800M share purchase after HK$80B placement

On August 25, Jack Ma, Joe Tsai, and Wu Yongming bought over HK$800M in Alibaba shares, responding to the HK$80B placement.

On August 25, sources disclosed that Alibaba founder Jack Ma has been adding to his Alibaba Hong Kong holdings over consecutive days, totaling more than HK$600M. Combined with prior HKEX disclosures, Chairman Joe Tsai and CEO Wu Yongming added about HK$200M over two days. Combined management buying has exceeded HK$800M.

On August 23, Alibaba announced a HK$80B share placement to non-US persons outside the United States, the first such placement since its 2019 Hong Kong listing. Net proceeds of about HK$79.7B will be invested entirely in full-stack AI capabilities and AI infrastructure. The placement is expected to settle on August 26. Alibaba's HK shares opened down over 8% on August 24, intraday losing more than 10%.

Management buying is seen as a counterweight to the dilution and short-term sentiment pressure from the placement. Ma, Tsai, and Wu are putting personal capital behind their long-term conviction in the company.
