Stripe reportedly acquires AI model routing platform OpenRouter for over $7 billion, 5x valuation in five months
Bloomberg reported on August 16 that Stripe has finalized an agreement to acquire AI model routing platform OpenRouter for more than $7 billion, about 5x the $1.3 billion Series B valuation OpenRouter achieved in May 2026.
On August 16, Bloomberg reported that Stripe has finalized an agreement to acquire AI model routing platform OpenRouter for more than $7 billion. Founded in 2023, OpenRouter provides developers with a unified API gateway to access more than 400 AI models from OpenAI, Anthropic, DeepSeek, Alibaba Qwen and others, and currently serves 8 million global developers while processing more than 25 trillion tokens per week.
In May this year OpenRouter closed a $113 million Series B at a $1.3 billion post-money valuation, with participation from Sequoia, Andreessen Horowitz, Menlo Ventures and Alphabet's CapitalG. The acquisition price represents roughly a 5x markup on that valuation in three months.
Stripe and OpenRouter have maintained an official partnership since October 2024, with OpenRouter using Stripe Invoicing, Stripe Tax and Radar for billing, compliance and fraud detection. Once integrated, Stripe gains a payments-and-routing infrastructure layer that spans multiple model providers, capturing capital flows as developers move from AI experimentation to production deployment. Stripe declined to comment on the report. If confirmed, this would set a record for AI model routing platform M&A. A CNBC investigation published August 7 disclosed that Chinese-origin models account for 46 percent of US enterprise token usage on OpenRouter, a regulatory complication Stripe will now inherit.
