Robotics startup Generalist raises nearly $200M extension at $3B valuation
On August 25, robotics startup Generalist closed a nearly $200M Series B extension at a $3B valuation, led by 8VC, a 50% increase from its $2B valuation in June. The company's Gen 1.5 model enables robots to learn physical tasks from 3-12 second video clips.
According to TechCrunch on August 25, robotics startup Generalist closed a nearly $200M Series B extension at a $3B valuation, led by 8VC, marking a 50% increase from its $2B valuation in June. The extension brings the B-round total to $600M.
Generalist was founded in 2024 by former Google DeepMind researchers Pete Florence and Andy Zeng alongside former Boston Dynamics engineer Andrew Barry. Early backers include 8VC, Radical Ventures, Union Square Ventures, NVIDIA, Bezos Expeditions, and Stanford's Fei-Fei Li. The startup operated quietly with little publicity until recently.
Generalist is developing the Gen 1.5 foundation model that allows robots to learn new physical tasks from video demonstrations as short as 3-12 seconds long, eliminating the need for hundreds or thousands of teleoperated repetitions. The model is designed to generalize across different robot hardware platforms rather than being trained separately for each one.
Generalist is working with a small number of enterprise customers, adapting the model to specific use cases. Competitors include Physical Intelligence (reportedly valued at $11B), SoftBank-backed Skild AI ($14B), and Genesis AI (in talks as of last month at a $3B valuation). The combined private market valuation for embodied AI foundation model startups exceeds $31B.
