Stripe in exclusive talks to acquire OpenRouter at around $10 billion

The Information reported on August 7 that Stripe is in exclusive talks to acquire AI model aggregation platform OpenRouter at a valuation of around $10 billion.

On August 7, The Information reported that fintech company Stripe is in exclusive talks to acquire AI model aggregation platform OpenRouter at a deal valuation of around $10 billion. OpenRouter had previously attracted acquisition interest from several large tech companies, but Stripe has now entered exclusive negotiations. The deal has not been finalized and specific terms may still change.

Founded in 2023, OpenRouter positions itself as an AI infrastructure platform that connects users with multiple large language models. It lets developers call AI models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and others through a unified interface, choosing different models based on performance, price, and availability. OpenRouter has become a key middleware layer in the AI application ecosystem through model aggregation, traffic distribution, and cost optimization.

If completed, the deal would be one of Stripe's most consequential AI moves in recent years. Stripe has historically focused on payments infrastructure, financial services, and enterprise software. Acquiring OpenRouter would expand its footprint into AI developer infrastructure. The Information noted OpenRouter's previous funding round valued it at $1.3 billion, and the new valuation represents roughly 70x its estimated $140 million annualized revenue.

Market participants see the deal as evidence that infrastructure companies that connect models, optimize inference costs, and manage AI workflows are gaining more attention as model counts multiplies. The premium valuation also reflects investor optimism about growth opportunities in both AI applications and infrastructure.
