SpaceX-Cursor deal could close as soon as next week, new products may use Grok branding

The Information reported on August 7 that SpaceX's $60 billion acquisition of Cursor could close as soon as the end of next week, with the Cursor brand phased out over coming months.

On August 7, The Information exclusively reported that SpaceX's acquisition of AI coding tool Cursor could close as soon as the end of next week and no later than the end of this month. The deal has cleared nearly all regulatory hurdles and is awaiting final approval. Cursor management briefed staff on the latest timeline at an August 6 all-hands.

The more striking details concern brand and org structure. The Cursor brand name will be phased out over the coming months. The most direct casualty is Cursor's next-generation general AI assistant, internally codenamed Sand. Internal discussions point to Grok Bot as the new name, though a completely new brand is also under consideration, skipping Grok entirely. Existing Cursor tools like the coding assistant will not be renamed in the short term.

On organization, Cursor will not run as an independent unit after the deal closes. Employees will be split and folded into SpaceX AI's existing teams. Within days of closing, all workflows, reporting lines, and Slack workspaces will be migrated to SpaceX's internal systems.

SpaceX announced the $60 billion Cursor acquisition in June, the largest startup acquisition on record. Cursor had reached roughly $4 billion in annualized revenue over the previous two years, with more than half of the Fortune 500 as customers. Context: SpaceX Q2 AI-related revenue hit $2.6 billion against $18.4 billion in capex, burning about $16 billion in cash flow. Elon Musk told the earnings call that SpaceX targets $100 billion annualized revenue by December.
