SpaceX reportedly acquires Cursor maker Anysphere for about $60 billion

On August 19, Bloomberg reported SpaceX closed an all-cash acquisition of Cursor maker Anysphere for approximately $60 billion. This is SpaceX's largest move in the AI coding space and the first confirmed ownership for Cursor's parent.
Prior to the acquisition, Cursor was already one of the most widely used AI coding tools among developers, alongside GitHub Copilot and Claude Code. Anysphere's last funding round valued the company at about $20 billion, making the deal roughly 3x the previous valuation. SpaceX had previously engaged in large models and coding AI via xAI (now SpaceXAI). The acquisition of Cursor allows SpaceX to integrate the coding tool into its in-house product stack.
During the same week, SpaceX was also reported to have approached Devin maker Cognition AI. Cognition co-founder Scott Wu publicly denied acquisition talks, saying the company was not for sale but was exploring compute cooperation with SpaceX. a16z, one of Cursor's largest shareholders, booked two major exits in one week with this deal and Stripe's OpenRouter acquisition.
