Most Amazon smart speakers sell for $40 to $240. The OpenAI device uses premium metal, has a distinctive design, and includes moving parts that shift when responding to user commands or interacting with users, along with lights, a camera system, and other sensors.
The device works like ChatGPT voice mode on mobile but runs a more advanced model for more human-like interaction. Users can carry it around the home one-handed, similar to the discontinued Amazon Tap. Ive led the design. He previously designed the iPhone, iPad, iPod, and Apple Watch and is known for minimalist premium industrial design.
Apple has sued OpenAI over alleged trade secret misappropriation and sought an injunction to block the product. OpenAI denies infringement and says the product does not use Apple trade secrets. OpenAI acquired Ive's AI hardware startup io last year and brought several former Apple designers onto its hardware team.
