OpenAI first AI hardware revealed, $300-$400 smart speaker in 2027

On August 7, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported in Power On that OpenAI's first AI hardware is a screenless smart speaker about the size of a hockey puck (around 7.62 cm diameter, 115.8 cubic centimeters), priced between $300 and $400, with launch expected in 2027. The product is positioned as an AI-native computer, differentiated from Amazon Echo and Google Nest.
The device was co-developed by OpenAI and LoveFrom, the design firm founded by former Apple chief designer Jony Ive. Ive led the design of iPhone, iPad, iPod, and Apple Watch. OpenAI acquired Ive's device startup io Products last year and folded the team into the company.
The hardware features moving parts, some of which move automatically to signal responsiveness. It includes lights, a camera system, and other sensors, with a battery-powered design usable handheld, on a nightstand, or on a kitchen counter. The AI capabilities will surpass OpenAI's current ChatGPT voice mode on the smartphone app and will learn about the user over time.
Apple has sued OpenAI over alleged trade secret misappropriation and sought an injunction to block the product. OpenAI denies infringement and says the products do not use Apple trade secrets.
