On August 18, 2026, OpenAI launched ChatGPT for Teens globally. The experience activates automatically when a user is estimated under 18 or self-reports age between 13 and 17. It blocks self-harm, sexual, and violent content by default, prohibits affective nicknames, and includes Study Mode plus parental controls.Study Mode uses guided questions and step-by-step support to help teens understand learning material. When the system detects a student trying to take shortcuts on homework, it redirects to step-by-step collaboration. Features include quizzes, learning visualizations, sensitive image upload warnings, teen onboarding, and Quiet Hours.Parents can link accounts to set Quiet Hours, manage settings, and receive notifications when teens discuss sensitive topics. OpenAI estimates age via self-report, behavioral signals, and a set of verification methods, defaulting to the safer setting when uncertain.The launch coincided with a partnership with CodeAI (formerly Code.org), including a joint advisory council, AI Hour events, a first Builders Challenge, Career Journeys, and consultation on CodeAI's AI Foundations curriculum. OpenAI has 900 million weekly active users.The release follows an FTC inquiry into chatbot safety for minors and multiple teen-safety lawsuits, including one from the family of 16-year-old Adam Raine.
