OpenAI's ChatGPT Atlas browser will shut down on August 9 after less than 10 months. Users must export bookmarks manually; browser capabilities shift to ChatGPT desktop and Chrome extension.
Reported August 3: OpenAI announced that ChatGPT Atlas browser will officially stop service on August 9, with no further feature updates or security patches. The browser launched on macOS on October 21, 2025, less than 10 months ago.
ChatGPT Atlas's core features include built-in ChatGPT, memory functions, and an AI agent summonable anywhere. It was once seen by the industry as a direct competitor to Google Chrome and Perplexity Comet. OpenAI founder Sam Altman called it an exciting product at launch.
OpenAI stated ChatGPT Atlas data will not auto-migrate to the updated ChatGPT. Users who want to keep bookmarks and history must export them as HTML and import into Chrome or other browsers. Atlas currently cannot export Cookies, so all websites need re-login after migration. After August 9, Atlas will likely be unable to open or browse pages.
OpenAI previously announced the integration of ChatGPT and Codex teams; in March this year OpenAI also officially shut down the Sora video generation app. Industry observers believe OpenAI is streamlining its product line to optimize financials ahead of IPO and strengthening ChatGPT's position as the core entry point.
