xAI Grok 4.6 rolls out in GitHub Copilot across eight development surfaces

On August 14, GitHub confirmed in its Changelog that xAI's Grok 4.6 is now available in Copilot across eight development surfaces: VS Code, Visual Studio, Copilot CLI, Copilot Cloud Agent, Copilot App, JetBrains IDEs, Xcode, and Eclipse. This is the first time Grok 4.6 has entered GitHub's mainstream product lineup since its August 12 release, covering Pro, Pro+, Max, Business, and Enterprise tiers.

GitHub's internal testing found Grok 4.6 especially strong on long-horizon reasoning and multi-step tool calls, particularly for terminal-based coding tasks in VS Code and the Copilot CLI. The result aligns with xAI's launch positioning for long-running agents, interactive visual work, and complex tool flows. xAI's published evaluation table puts Grok 4.6 at 61 on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index, tied with GPT-5.6 Sol Max and one point behind Fable 5 Max, with 69.9 percent on CursorBench v3.2 and 65.9 percent on DeepSWE v1.1.

Two usage caveats apply. First, on Copilot Business and Enterprise, Grok 4.6 is off by default and an administrator must enable it in Copilot settings before seats can select the model. Second, Grok 4.6 is billed at provider list pricing under usage-based billing rather than drawing down Copilot's flat request allowance, meaning high-usage seats will consume more credits.
