OpenAI launches GPT-5.6 series with three-tier pricing

OpenAI officially launched GPT-5.6 on July 10 with Sol, Terra, and Luna tiers at $5/$2.50/$1 input and $30/$15/$6 output per 1M tokens.

On July 10 Beijing time, OpenAI officially launched the GPT-5.6 series, including Sol, Terra, and Luna versions. The names correspond to the sun, earth, and moon in Latin.

Sol is the flagship version priced at $5 input and $30 output per 1M tokens, targeting complex coding, research, and cybersecurity tasks. Terra is the balanced version with performance on par with the previous GPT-5.5, priced at $2.50 input and $15 output per 1M tokens, half the price of GPT-5.5. Luna is the lightweight version targeting low-cost and rapid response, priced at $1 input and $6 output per 1M tokens.

GPT-5.6 introduces max and ultra reasoning control modes. The max mode allows the model to spend more time on reasoning. The ultra mode coordinates 4 agents working in parallel on complex tasks by default, scalable up to 16. OpenAI also announced ChatGPT Codex integration, with Codex officially becoming part of the new ChatGPT desktop application.
