OpenAI officially launched GPT-5 in the early hours of August 8, the first integer-numbered GPT model in two years and four months. GPT-5 merges the separate GPT and o-series reasoning models into one unified system, eliminating the need to manually switch between fast and slow thinking modes.
The GPT-5 family includes GPT-5, GPT-5 mini, and GPT-5 nano, all with a 400K context window and 128K max output tokens. API pricing: GPT-5 $1.25 input / $10 output per 1M tokens; mini $0.25 / $2; nano $0.05 / $0.40. The price undercuts comparable flagship models like Claude Opus 4.1, sparking industry discussion of an AI price war.
On capabilities, GPT-5 reduces hallucination rate by about 45% versus GPT-4o and about 80% versus o3 in deep-thinking mode. Free users can access GPT-5 with quota limits, while Plus and Pro subscribers get higher entitlements. OpenAI simultaneously integrated GPT-5 into Microsoft 365 Copilot, GitHub Copilot, and Azure AI Foundry.
