Google strikes $2.4B Windsurf license deal, CEO joins DeepMind
On August 8, Google signed a roughly $2.4 billion technology licensing deal with AI coding startup Windsurf, with CEO Varun Mohan and other core team members joining DeepMind.
On August 8, it was reported that Google has signed a strategic licensing agreement with AI coding startup Windsurf worth approximately $2.4 billion. Windsurf co-founder and CEO Varun Mohan, fellow co-founder Douglas Chen, and additional R&D staff will join Google DeepMind.
The license is non-exclusive, allowing Windsurf to continue operating independently and collaborate with other partners. Windsurf investors gain partial liquidity while retaining equity. The deal follows the acquihire pattern recently used by Microsoft, Amazon, and Meta to absorb startup talent alongside technology licensing.
At DeepMind, Mohan, Chen, and additional R&D staff will focus on agentic coding, autonomous code generation and refinement, integrated into Google's Gemini AI suite. DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis publicly confirmed the recruitments and underscored the ongoing push on coding capabilities.
The deal follows the collapse of months of acquisition talks between Windsurf and OpenAI, which had reportedly explored a $3 billion purchase before the deal dissolved partly due to Microsoft's involvement, clearing the way for Google. Founded in 2021, Windsurf had raised about $150 million in Series C funding at a roughly $1.25 billion valuation and employs around 250 staff.
