Google brings Gemini Personal Intelligence to Android Auto and Google built-in cars, drawing on Gmail, Calendar, Maps and Photos

The Verge reported Oct 20 that Google began rolling out Gemini's Personal Intelligence to Android Auto, drawing on Gmail, Calendar, Maps, Photos, YouTube and Search to answer questions such as flight status, navigate to a calendar appointment and identify a place from a photo. Google built-in cars from Ford, GM, Honda, Nissan, Volvo and Polestar will get support in coming months.

The Verge reported on Oct 20 that Google is bringing a personalization feature called Personal Intelligence to in-car Gemini. It lets Gemini pull information from a user's Google apps inside Android Auto and cars with Google built-in, in order to answer questions, plan routes and carry out navigation rather than just doing ordinary voice search or Q&A.

On data sources, the apps the article explicitly names are Gmail, Calendar, Maps, Photos, YouTube and Search. Google gives three concrete examples: a user driving to the airport asks for flight status, and Gemini first pulls the flight details from a confirmation email in Gmail before looking up current status; the user simply says take me to my doctor's appointment and Gemini uses the Calendar entry to start navigating without a manual address lookup; and the user asks Gemini to find the car wash from a photo taken last week and navigate there, using Photos to identify or locate it. The article does not explain specific uses for YouTube and Search in the car.

On privacy and enablement, Google says apps are connected to Gemini only if the user turns on the Personal Intelligence setting. Personalized answers are also only provided while the user's phone is connected to the car. If Personal Intelligence is not used, everything in the car still works, including navigation, music, calls and questions, but answers will not be tailored. The article does not specify permission granularity, data retention, whether data is processed locally, or whether users can authorize apps individually.

On timing, it is worth separating the feature rollout from when the assistant arrived in cars. Gemini came to Android Auto last year and to Google built-in cars in April 2026, while Personal Intelligence began rolling out to Android Auto on Oct 20, with support for Google built-in vehicles to follow in the coming months.

On automakers, the article names six: Ford, GM, Honda, Nissan, Volvo and Polestar, several of which already offer Google built-in on some newer models. The original uses the word including, so these six are representative rather than a complete partnership list, and the article lists no specific models, trim levels or regions.
