Cursor launches Origin code hosting platform in beta with GitHub sync and agent-native workflow

On August 22, AI coding tool Cursor officially launched its code hosting platform Origin in early beta, rolling out to paid users. Origin stores Git code and provides browsing, search, pull request and review capabilities. Developers can create repositories directly on Origin or sync existing GitHub projects into it.

The sync is not a simple mirror. For projects imported from GitHub, review comments left in Cursor flow back to GitHub, and replies made on GitHub appear in Cursor within seconds. Those projects keep GitHub as the source of truth and users can sever the sync at any time. This suggests Origin's near-term strategy is to lower migration friction rather than force developers to immediately pick between GitHub and Origin.

The timing was dramatic. The same day GitHub experienced a 7-hour-47-minute major outage spanning code operations, API, Actions, Pull Requests, Issues and Copilot, with peak web and API error rates around 20% and some source-code and archive download error rates hitting 50%. Origin got an almost free advertising slot during that window.

Cursor's ambition goes beyond becoming another GitHub. Origin is already integrated with Vercel, Buildkite and Depot for deploy and CI workflows, with room reserved for agent-native capabilities that will eventually let AI move from helping people write code to understanding repositories, modifying programs, opening branches, participating in review and pushing changes live. But replacing GitHub is still premature: GitHub officially serves more than 180 million developers and more than 400 million repositories, with a vast open-source and enterprise ecosystem. Source code is enterprises' most sensitive asset, and security, permissions, compliance and long-term stability matter far more than one extra AI button.

Origin is Cursor's first major product update since the company was reportedly acquired by SpaceX for roughly $60 billion in June.
