AWS and OpenAI launch Bedrock Managed Agents preview, OpenAI agents run entirely inside AWS

AWS and OpenAI jointly released the Amazon Bedrock Managed Agents preview on September 30, a customized AWS-native version of the OpenAI Agents API that runs all inference inside the customer's AWS account, with IAM identities and CloudTrail auditing; Salesforce is among the first customers.

Amazon Web Services and OpenAI jointly released the Amazon Bedrock Managed Agents (BMA) preview on September 30. BMA is an AWS-native service built on a customized version of OpenAI's Agents API, allowing enterprises to build agents optimized for OpenAI models that run entirely inside their AWS account, with no inference or data leaving AWS. Bedrock Managed Agents automatically manages model state, tool selection, code execution, and multi-step decision coordination. Durable sessions retain messages, tool calls, and intermediate results, so users can return later and continue from prior progress.

The platform supports the Model Context Protocol (MCP) and reusable skills. Each agent has its own IAM role, can require human approval before consequential actions, and writes supported API activity to AWS CloudTrail. During preview, BMA carries no additional charge beyond underlying AWS resource consumption and is available in US East (N. Virginia), US East (Ohio), and US West (Oregon). Bedrock Managed Agents sits on top of the OpenAI Agents API, which gained computer-use capability the same day, letting developers build agents that work through software in a browser hosted by OpenAI.

Salesforce is among the first customers. Joe Inzerillo, Salesforce's president of enterprise and AI technology, said customers can pair OpenAI models and AWS infrastructure with their own Salesforce data and controls: "Data never leaves AWS, and security stops being the bottleneck between our customers and what comes next." Other AWS AI updates published the same day include general availability of GPT-6.1 Sol on Bedrock, AWS Transform migration assessment agents covering on-premises Apache Kafka to Amazon MSK, TwelveLabs Marengo on Bedrock used by Condé Nast to process 140,000 videos, and a contract-extraction reference architecture on Bedrock AgentCore Runtime that uses Claude Haiku to verify Claude Sonnet extractions at an estimated $349 per month for 1,000 contracts.
