Anthropic reopens "What Do You Want from AI?" study, first time participants can publish transcripts

Anthropic reopened its "What Do You Want from AI?" study from September 29 to October 6, 2026, for Free, Pro, and Max Claude users with accounts at least two weeks old. For the first time, participants can opt to publish their full interview transcripts, with Anthropic warning AI could re-identify them from small details.

Anthropic reopened its "What Do You Want from AI?" study on September 29 through October 6, 2026. The interview runs about 15 minutes and is available to Free, Pro, and Max Claude users whose accounts are at least two weeks old. The new element in this round is a publication option: participants can now opt to make their entire interview public. Anthropic says it will publish the complete transcript with associated country data, excluding the Claude account name and email. The company flags a risk it does not solve: "Someone could use AI to combine small details...to work out who a participant is."

Both the Claude-user sample bias and the public-release sample bias are written into the FAQ: "Participants in this study will all be people who use Claude, which is not a representative sample of the public," and the subset opting into public release "may differ from those who don't." Anyone citing this data will need to carry both caveats. The December 2025 round of the same study drew responses from 81,000 people and, per Anthropic, shaped the Anthropic Institute's research agenda presented at the World Economic Forum to international leaders.

No individual researchers are named in the announcement. Publishing interview transcripts turns Anthropic's user research into a public dataset any rival lab, journalist, or regulator can inspect; Anthropic's own caveats on Claude-user sample bias and AI-driven re-identification are the framing anyone citing this data will need to carry with it.
