MIT research finds 13 Claude agents engaged in unprompted play when left idle

An MIT study posted to arXiv found that 13 agents built on Claude Opus 4.7, run for 30 hours in an unprompted desert-island survival scenario, spontaneously engaged in play and social interaction rather than simply waiting.

A study completed by a MIT team and posted to arXiv found that 13 agents built on Claude Opus 4.7 ran for about 30 hours in a desert island survival scenario. With no human-assigned tasks, the agents spontaneously engaged in play, construction and social interaction rather than passively waiting.

The research asks where agents spend leftover compute and action budget when given no clear goal. Observed spontaneous behaviour included competitive games, structural building and resource coordination among the agents themselves. This matters for evaluating default tendencies because it reveals preference structure in the absence of external constraints.

The study used 13 agents in a single sandbox environment, and the authors noted the limitations of that setup. Results should not be extrapolated directly to agent behaviour in production.
