Anthropic launches Public Benefit Fund on Oct 18, commits 5% of shares with 2% added per 50% valuation increase

Anthropic establishes the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund (wholly-owned LLC) with an initial 5% share commitment; board may add 2% per 50% valuation increase; ~20% of shares ultimately dedicated to public good; explicitly bars lobbying and political giving.

On October 18, Anthropic announced the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, a wholly-owned LLC, with an initial commitment of 5% of the company's shares. For every 50% increase in company value above a set baseline, the board may add another 2% of shares at its discretion. None of the Anthropic equity held by the LLC will be used for lobbying or political giving in the US or abroad. Combined with the co-founders' 80% equity pledge made when Anthropic was founded in 2021, plus the equity donation match program in which about half of employees participate, roughly 20% of Anthropic's shares will ultimately be dedicated to public good.

Exploratory uses include large donations to traditional nonprofits and direct distributions to specific populations, with a focus on AI's impact on the labor market — Anthropic has already committed $200 million to study this issue. The post noted that given the pace of AI progress, bolder approaches may be needed, and the Fund will have the versatility to pursue them.

Anthropic publicly contrasted the move with the common tech-industry practice of offering escalating compensation awards tied to executive performance, redirecting that equity to public benefit instead. Fund structure and governance details will be shared over the coming months, and a public benefit report is forthcoming.
